The Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer.  And that means trips to local rivers, lakes and swimming pools.

Before you hit the water for fun in the sun, the Arkansas Department of Health offers these steps to avoid recreational water illnesses (RWIs).

RWIs can cause a wide variety of problems, including gastrointestinal, skin, ear, respiratory, eye, neurologic and wound infections.

The most commonly reported RWI is diarrhea, which can be caused by germs like cryptosporidium, norovirus and E. coli.
